Discovered: 19th September 1852 (time unknown), from Naples, Italy, by Annibale de Gasparis
Notes: Namesake and parent body of the Massalia family, a very large group consisting of stony asteroids with low inclinations.

Naming information

Name origin: Latin name for the French city of Marseille, from which the independent discover Jean Chacornac sighted it the night following de Gasparis' discovery. Founded in 754 BC by Greek settlers from Phocaea, Marseille is the oldest city in France, as well as one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited settlements.
