Naming information
Name origin: Greek goddess of wisdom and counsel, mother of Athene by Zeus.
Mythology: Metis was an Oceanid, daughter of the Titans Oceanos and Tethys. She could change her shape at will. When Kronos had devoured all his children except Zeus, Metis produced the potion that forced him to regurgitate them. In a prophecy, Zeus was told she would give him a daughter, followed by a son who would eventually overthrow him; he therefore swallowed her to prevent this. She was already pregnant with Athene, who famously emerged fully grown from Zeus's head. After Zeus swallowed her, Metis continued to advise him from within. Theoi adds: "It should be noted that most poets and mythographers describe Athena as a "motherless goddess" and no mention is made of Metis. Zeus himself was titled Mêtieta 'the Wise Counsellor' in the Homeric poems and in this sense Metis was probably regarded as an aspect of the god rather than a distinct figure. In any case, the Metis myth implies she was wholly subsumed by the devouring god."
