Location: Trans-Neptunian Object (TNO)
Orbit length (approx): 281.07 years
Discovered: 7th March 2003, 00:40 UTC, from Sierra Nevada Observatory in Spain
Notes: Third-largest known trans-Neptunian object, after Eris and Pluto.

Naming information

Name origin: Hawai'ian goddess of fertility and childbirth
Mythology: Mother of many important deities (including Pele, Hi'iaka and Namaka) and herself among the first worshipped on the Hawai'ian islands. She repeatedly transforms herself from an old woman to a young girl, and returns to her homeland periodically to give birth to further generations of humans. She is said to have given humans the ability to give birth naturally, and left humanity behind when her identity was discovered.
